Walking around Uzerche

Walking in Uzerche, the Pearl of the Limousin

Less than fifteen minutes north of the hotel is Uzerche, nicknamed the Pearl of the Limousin by the economist and writer Arthur Young for its geographical and historical uniqueness.

A Roman military garrison after the Gallic War, a fortress under Pepin the Short and then an abbey in the 11th century, Uzerche still preserves traces of its ancient and medieval history.

Listed as one of the hundred most beautiful detours in France, this small town of 2,800 inhabitants is ideal for a day's strolling or for satisfying your thirst for knowledge.

Visit Uzerche and its monuments

Because of the steep gradients, it's a good idea to visit Uzerche and the surrounding area on foot.

Start your visit at the Porte Bécharie, the old fortified entrance to the town, then continue on to the Notre-Dame de Bécharie chapel, built in the 15th century.

Around the centre of Uzerche, you can admire the stone facades of medieval buildings and Renaissance châteaux and manor houses.

A former seneschalsea, Uzerche was for a long time a popular destination for the French nobility, which explains the large number of stone houses resembling small châteaux.

After touring the town, you can finish your walk on the Place de la Lunade, at the foot of the Abbatiale Saint-Pierre d'Uzerche. From this elevated spot, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the whole town.

Hiking in Uzerche

Set on the banks of the Vézère and surrounded by mountain ranges, Uzerche is not just a town of great historical and tourist value.
It is also the starting point for a number of hiking trails:

Starting from the small railway station, a signposted circuit lasting around 1h30 will take you along the Vézère, which you will cross by its bridges to return to the town by the other bank.

For the more adventurous, there are longer hiking trails through the Monédières massif. Other hiking trails leave from the town and take in natural wonders such as the Bialet waterfalls.
