Visit Brive-la-Gaillarde

Brive-la-Gaillarde: an experience in the heart of Corrèze

Located a 30-minute drive from the hotel, Brive-la-Gaillarde is a must-visit destination in Corrèze.

The town has lived many lives: a small settlement in Gallo-Roman times, followed by a medieval stronghold.

Long a coveted prize changing hands between France and England Brive has successfully preserved traces of its history.

Today, it charms visitors with both its heritage and its friendly atmosphere.

Brive’s historical heritage: a journey back in time

Brive’s historic center is easily explored on foot, allowing you to discover centuries of history as you wander the streets.

Must-see sites include:

  • The Brive Lighthouse (Le Phare de Brive)
Built in the 19th century, this lighthouse-shaped water tower is one of the town’s unique landmarks.
Listed as a historical monument, it now houses the tourist office. Visitors can tour the building and enjoy a panoramic view of Brive.

  • The Collegiate Church of Saint-Martin
Built in the 12th century over older ruins, it dominates the town with its 60-meter-high bell tower.
Dedicated to Saint Martin the Spaniard, it is an iconic Brive landmark that can be visited independently or with a guide.

  • The Tower of the Échevins (Tour des Échevins)
A Renaissance-style house dating from around 1500, it is notable for its salamander-shaped door knocker.
Located on Rue des Échevins, this former home of local notables has been modified over time, resulting in an interesting architectural blend.

A lively town rooted in tradition

Brive-la-Gaillarde is also renowned for its bustling commercial life, particularly its markets.

  • The Halle Brassens Market
Open on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 7:30 AM, it brings together numerous local producers. You will find local specialties from the Corrèze region here, such as walnuts, truffles, and various meats.

  • La Halle Gaillarde
Opened in 2019, this modern market hall is a lively hub where you can shop, dine on-site, and enjoy various events. It is open every morning and until 4:00 PM on Sundays.

  • Denoix Distillery
Showcasing the town through local craftsmanship, this distillery specializes in walnut and herbal liqueurs. It has upheld its traditional expertise for over 180 years and offers tours that include tastings.

  • Labenche Museum
For a more cultural experience, the museum presents the history of Brive through nearly 5,000 objects displayed across 17 rooms. Housed in a listed Renaissance building, it regularly hosts exhibitions and activities.
